M/s. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), is the premier National Oil Company in the South Asian region. The organisation is primarily involved in the refining, transportation & marketing of crude oil & petroleum products. The company is also diversifying into the field of petrochemicals, oil exploration & production and power generation among others.
I joined IOCL as a Management Trainee (Materials) in October 1994 at the company’s Barauni Refinery and was subsequently confirmed as a Materials Officer in October 1995 & posted at the organisation’s Panipat Refinery Project. In April 1999, I was again promoted to the post of a Senior Materials Officer. The then greenfield project is now a full fledged, commissioned 6 MMTPA refinery.
Till June 2005, I used to report to the Manager / Sr. Materials Manager of the refinery in my day to day jobs. I was responsible for the procurement of all Rotary Spare parts, both proprietary & otherwise, Mechanical consumables, Laboratory & Process Instrumentation items & their spares, IT products & consumables. The job involves selection of vendors, issue of tender documents, receiving bids from vendors, commercial evaluation of offers, interacting with vendors for resolving technical & commercial issues & negotiating with them, obtaining higher management’s approval for placement of Purchase Orders & interacting with the Finance department for ensuring smooth & timely payments to suppliers. The assignment also involved close follow-up with vendors for expediting supplies & monitoring transportation for a few specific cases where the requirement is critical like during refinery maintenance shutdown jobs and administering certain contracts. The purchasing activities are in an SAP R/3 environment. I was also actively involved in minor day to day trouble shooting of activities in the SAP MM Module.
The purchasing procedure followed was as defined in the ISO 9000 manual for the Unit. The Purchase requisition and the Purchase Procedure are the primary documents which control the purchasing process.
My assignment (from June 2005 to Feb 2007) involved chartering of Ocean going tankers from the Indian & International markets for the transportation of crude & petroleum products to & from various Indian ports.

(IISCO) and was responsible for the maintenance of all electrical equipment at the Blast Furnaces & Ore and coke handling sections as a shift engineer. I was subsequently assigned to the units sales office at New Delhi which was responsible for marketing the company’s products in Northern India.
I was responsible for marketing the company’s structural steel (long) products and also establishing & streamlining in Northern India ISAMS (The Integrated Sales & Accounting Management System), an INGRES based package which brought information technology to the marketing of IISCO’s products.
I was responsible for making quotations, following up on them upto placement of Purchase Orders, interacting with the plant for initiating Work Orders & monitoring despatches. I was also assigned the task of carrying out research into various upcoming projects which could result in a market for the company’s products in future.
